چکیده

We study sequences of infinitely near T -points of a smooth family F/Y of geometrically irreducible surfaces. We destinguish a special sort of such sequences, the strict sequences. To each one, we associate an ordered unweighted Enriques diagram. We prove that the various sequences with a given diagram form a functor, and we represent it by a smooth Y -scheme. We equip this scheme with a free action of the automorphism group of the diagram. We equip the diagram with weights, take the subgroup of automorphisms preserving the weights, and form the corresponding quotient scheme. Our main theorem asserts the existence of a universally injective map from this quotient scheme to the Hilbert scheme of F/Y ; further, this map is an embedding in characteristic 0. However, in every positive characteristic, we give an example where the map is purely inseparable.

Characteristic points have been a primary tool in the study of a generating function defined by a single recursive equation. We investigate the proper way to adapt this tool when working with multi-equation recursive systems.

If a finite group G has a presentation with d generators and r relations, it is well-known that r−d is at least the rank of the Schur multiplier of G; a presentation is called efficient if equality holds. There is an analogous definition for proficient profinite presentations. We show that many perfect groups have proficient presentations. Moreover, we prove that infinitely many alternating gro...

We study families V of curves in P(C) of degree d having exactly r singular points of given topological or analytic types. We derive new sufficient conditions for V to be T-smooth (smooth of the expected dimension), respectively to be irreducible. For T-smoothness these conditions involve new invariants of curve singularities and are conjectured to be asymptotically proper, i.e., optimal up to ...

In this paper some new cases of Knaster's problem on continuous maps from spheres are established. In particular, we consider an almost orbit of a p-torus X on the sphere, a continuous map f from the sphere to the real line or real plane, and show that X can be rotated so that f becomes constant on X.
